The Weight of Observation
The Weight of Observations explores the unseen marine life that underpins our ocean ecosystems. Inspired by Ernst Haeckel’s illustrations of microscopic organisms, these small-scale timber and mixed-media sculptures began as biological studies but evolved through carving into new, imagined forms. They echo zooplankton and phytoplankton, yet remain distinctly their own species.
The series reflects my interest in how observation is never neutral. Our ways of seeing — shaped by curiosity, bias, and interpretation — inevitably skew what we perceive. Rather than avoid this distortion, I treat it as a creative force.
By enlarging and reinterpreting microscopic life, these works invite viewers to look closely and consider the vital, invisible worlds that sustain our oceans, and how our own gaze shapes what we understand of the natural world.
