Several small series of works belong to this overarching series, with some works featuring ceramic bowls and utensil tops, and others ceramic handles. These works were made while on a month-long residency at Burnt Dirt at Clay Wollongong. Several small series utilised the bespoke glazes created by the glaze technician at Burnt Dirt.
This collection of implements references a diverse range of domestic tools. Hand-built ceramic utensils of colanders, oven forks and pastry brushes; simply glazed, allude to the traditions of make and make do. Perhaps not precious objects by today’s standards, this domestic arsenal was integral for the unchallenged female rulers of the kitchen. Useful objects would be repaired, handed down and treasured by generations of womenfolk in Australian households in contrast to our current consumer culture.
